If that's what you have, eMachines is notorious for using low end Bestec power supplies that are very problematic. Make sure you're replacing the correct piece of hardware. As for whether the eBay board will fit in your case.it should.
But understand that because it uses a completely different chipset (nVidia vs Intel), the system will NOT be able boot into the OS. Windows will have to be reinstalled. Could the problem possibly be the HDD or the RAM stick? I have to sort this before the weekend and dont want to be ordering a new board for him if its not the board, it does seem odd though that the pc shop told him it was a new board he needed, and quoted £260 which i think in USD would be something like $410. You really need to troubleshoot more. If the system didn't beep when the RAM was removed, I'd say either the CPU or board is bad.
Since it beeped, the CPU is more than likely OK & the board is.probably. OK.
Is the keyboard USB? If it is, try a PS/2 keyboard. A USB to PS/2 adapter.may. work, but you'd be better off trying a true PS/2 keyboard. Are you using onboard video or a video card?
If the monitor's connected to a card but onboard is available, remove the card & connect the monitor to the onboard. It it's already connected to the onboard, try a card. Also, if you haven't already done so, unplug the power cord & reset the BIOS using the clear CMOS jumper.
Mcp73vt Pm Bios Update
On starting pc i get - no beeps - keyboard not working - plus a black screen. I removed memory stick - i get 1 long beep until o power off pc. Reconnected memory in different slot. Connected PS2 keyboard monitor connected to onboard video (do not have video card) disconnected power and reset the BIOS using the clear CMOS jumper, that didnt work so i removed the battery on the mobo and that also has not worked, so tried all the above including swapping the power supply to a better working pcu but still on powering up, no beep and no keyboard and no video. So i think new motherboard is my only option no?
